What are the options to bring young people in to my business?

Our research revealed that 66% of businesses did not have a specific entry point for young people to gain employment stated on their website. 80% of young people told us they would visit a company website regardless of where they first saw a job post to find out more and to see if it is a company they wish to work for. So, it’s important for a business to present itself in a way that is attractive and accessible to young people.

When we gave companies the feedback from the research we were often told they didn’t know how to access young people.

We soon realised that small and medium sized companies were not necessarily aware of the different ways in which they could introduce their company to young people or what potential entry points they could create for young people.

So, after speaking to our contacts within education and youth initiatives, we have created this free guidance to help you understand your options to bring young people in to your business.

Inside the guide you will find a straightforward list of the options available; a brief description, how it works, what’s in it for your business and what’s in it for the young person.

A big thank you to our contributors; Talent Match Leicester, De Montfort University, Leicestershire Education Business Company (LEBC) and Leicestershire Local Enterprise Partnership (LLEP).

Our advice for any business considering bringing in young people is:

  • To think local when it comes to attraction and recruitment of young people
  • Form relationships with schools, colleges, universities and youth initiatives
  • Engage with existing employees (who have children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins)

The educational establishments often have employability targets and have dedicated resource who are there to engage with your business.

Bringing young people in to your business should form part of your overall recruitment plan to provide a balanced and diverse workforce.
